Home Depot DIH Workshop Holiday Ornament Display

Last week I announced in THIS POST that I was teaming up with The Home Depot again to do another DIH (Do It Herself) Workshop Challenge. I just LOVE creating and building and making decor or art so this is always fun for me. In last week’s post, we announced our project, a Holiday Ornament Display. This is the picture we received from Home Depot and given the measurements and instructions for our project. We try to come up with the same kind of idea but with our own style and take on this challenge.

I think this project is adorable and it was so fun. While I love the idea, I knew immediately who I was giving it to…my mother-in-law. She lives alone and doesn’t like getting all of her Christmas decor up any more but I give her a hard time for not putting up a tree. She works long days and doesn’t have the energy to get all her decor up and set out. The idea of something small and simple was perfect for her. So I think this Holiday Ornament Display would be just the thing she’d appreciate having in her family room to celebrate this Christmas season.

I love golds and silvers at Christmas time. And I knew the pops of gold would be so pretty and classy in her home. After measuring and cutting my wood to make the frame, I painted it white. I wanted the ornaments to really stand out. While I was looking through all of the adorable ornaments at Home Depot, I came across these gorgeous pine stems with pinecones, leaves and fruit.

I immediately saw them layered to make a tree! I knew I would need 5 and there were exactly 5 left on the shelf. It was a sign ha! I put them in 3 rows and glued them on to the board. Then I started placing and gluing all of these beautiful silver and gold ornaments (also from The Home Depot, like all of the materials) on the tree.

For the trunk of the tree, I found this pretty, sparkly gold garland. I just glued them on in one continuous zig-zag until it formed into a trunk.

As I was checking out at The Home Depot, I had an idea. I ran back to get a small strand of Christmas lights and a smaller drill bit. I decided to drill holes throughout the tree and stick the small lights through the holes to look like it was lit up. Isn’t that fun?! Using my staple gun, I attached them in place and left enough of the cord at the end to plug into the wall.

I also found a beautiful snowflake Christmas tree topper that looks like it is made out of mercury glass and knew it would be that perfect amount of sparkle or the top of the tree. I just unscrewed and removed the coil that normally hooks onto the tree.

It can be set above the mantel, on the hearth, or even set on the floor. I can’t wait to give it to my mother-in-law! I just know she is going to love it and it will be the perfect substitution for her larger tree until she is ready to do that again.

Home Depot DIH Workshop for November

I’m so honored to be back for another Home Depot DIH (Do It Herself) Workshop for this month of November. Before I tell you what we’re working on, let me just tell you how much FUN this is! No matter what your skill level is or even if you’re new to using a screwdriver, Home Depot walks you through these projects step-by-step at these workshops and make it easy to create these projects.

Last month, we were given the challenge to create this Seasonal Character Door Hanger. It was so fun and you can see more of that HERE.

This month, we are being asked to create a Holiday Ornament Display like this one.

Hmmm…any ideas as to what I might do? Stay tuned because next week as 25 of us bloggers from all over the U.S. reveal our Holiday Ornament Displays. I’m so excited to work with our team leader again, Sandra from TheRusticLife. Besides Sandra and myself, our team of 5 members include:

Home Depot DIH Workshop Seasonal Character Door Hanger

Hello & Welcome to our Home Depot Virtual Online Party!

I’m so excited that you stopped by today! I can finally reveal what I’ve been making as part of the Home Depot DIH (Do-It-Herself) Workshop. The project assignment was to make this adorable Seasonal Character Door Hanger. Here is one of the pictures Home Depot gave us:

So I gave it some thought….I could do a snowman, Frankenstein, maybe a witch version, a scarecrow, Santa Claus….so many fun ideas! But I sure do LOVE snowmen and thought a Christmas door hanger would be fun. So here is my fancy shmancy snowman I made!

Isn’t he adorable?! With my Christmas colors I use being golds and silvers and champagnes and white….I thought the gold would be super stunning against my grey front door.

I measured twice, cut once (even a beginner can do this simple project!), and glued these wood panels together.

I painted it all white….

Sprayed the top section gold and wood “hat trim” gold glitter….

Here are the exact ones I used and this is my FAVORITE gold spray paint! The others are all either too dull, too bronze or orange looking, or take forever to dry. I use this Rustoleum metallic gold on EVERYTHING in my home. This, and all products used, can be found at The Home Depot.

I brought my project inside to my kitchen counter top because I was being eaten alive by mosquitos eek! I attached the hat trim…

I used white paint to dry brush some faux snow on the brim and top of the hat and stippled some paint as well, for a more 3D effect.

I used this Rustoleum white spray glitter directly on top of the “snow” to give it more glistening effect.

I used a hot glue gun to attach these adorable embellishments. I found the gold poinsettia flower stem at the Home Depot in the Christmas section that arrived just on time for my project. I also found this Martha Stewart Christmas spray there as well. Putting them together made it the perfect fancy embellishment I was looking for!

I attached the eye hooks and rope at the top….

…and then started creating a cute little face, free-hand, and filled it in with a black Sharpee marker and orange acrylic craft paint.

For the cheeks, I used this fun Rustoleum Champagne Pink that is new (I’ve been dying to use it on something).

I cut out a circle from a piece of paper, laid it on top of the cheek area, and sprayed a few quick times for the perfect rosy-cheek effect.

Easy peasy!

You should’ve seen the look on my kids’ faces when they came home from school to see this cute face on our door! They LOVED it!!! And….they think I’m pretty awesome for building it all by myself.

The Home Depot Do It Herself Workshop

Hey everyone! I have exciting news that I’m announcing today…. I was chosen to participate in the latest DIH Workshop by Home Depot. What is DIH? It stands for “Do It Herself.” I think it is so wonderful that the Home Depot encourages women to learn new skills and challenges them to create new things!

This week, 25 women throughout the country will be revealing this DIH Workshop project on our blogs with step-by-step instructions and pictures. We are split into five groups. I’m so honored to be a part of this group of five ladies, hosted by my friend Sandra from The Rustic Life. The other 4 talented ladies include:

The project this time is this fun seasonal door hanger.

We have all been given the same project and instructions how to build this. From there, we are given the creative freedom and, with our own unique twist, sharing our final creations. Doesn’t that sound so fun?! I can’t wait to see how everyone’s project turns out!
