Unless you’re living on a remote island, you’re probably aware of the huge marble trend right now. It’s everywhere and I’m loving it! My contractor friends tell me that wives are calling them left and right and wanting kitchen and bathroom remodels with marble. Every store selling home decor has included marble-top tables, marble cutting boards, marble lamps, and the list goes on. Marble trays are also popular right now but some are selling for a crazy amount. I’ve seen some for as low as $60 which is great but I’ve seen them as high as $200-$400. Well, if you’re not wanting to spend that on a tray, and I don’t blame you, I have a fabulous faux marble tray diy for you today!
A couple of weeks ago, I shared some of the most popular coffee tables trending right now and included my easy diy ikea hack {instructions here}. My end result was a fabulous gold and glass coffee table with a faux-marble shelf.
After some of the marble tray prices I’ve seen, I thought I would do another diy and create a faux marble tray that I could use, at least until I found a real one for a reasonable price. Here is the tray I started with.
I bought it at Goodwill recently for $3.99 but it had a Hobby Lobby tag on the bottom so I looked it up. It currently sells there for $44.98. Um, scooooore!! I had leftover white faux-marble contact paper from my table so I used it for the inside of the tray. Here is how I created this tray.
What you’ll need:
Tray (look through your home, you probably have one already or head to a thrift store)
Gold (or other color) Spray Paint
White Marble Contact Paper
Plastic Scraper
Measuring Tape
Scissors
X-acto knife
Instructions:
1- Spray the entire tray with gold (or silver or other color desired) spray paint in 2-3 thin coats. Let dry completely (overnight) so that it’s not at all tacky.
2- Measure the inside bottom of the tray and cut marble contact paper to fit exactly.
3- While peeling back one end, apply that slowly and evenly to inside of the tray and use a scraper to evenly scrape it into place, getting rid of any bubbles, from one end to the other until completely adhered.
4- Use an X-acto knife to cut any excess length around edges of inside of the tray.
5- Style! That’s it!
You can use it on your bathroom counter.
You can use it on your coffee table, on your sofa or chaise lounge, to serve your guests.
You can use it anywhere. I’m using it right now in my office on my shelving unit to display some of the pearl bracelets I’m selling in my online shoppe.
All bracelets shown can be found in my online shoppe!
Isn’t that fun?! Now, if you prefer the real deal, trust me….I have saved some that I love. You can shop them below.
I hope this was helpful! It might be a good idea to try this faux marble tray diy and see if you like the look! If it satisfies your need for that look, you’ll save money. You might not desire the real marble trays after this or maybe you decide you DO want to invest the money and get a real one because you liked this faux one so much. And my cost? Less than $10!!! That’s pretty amazing, if you ask me.
