We’ve been in our new home here in Vancouver, WA for almost a year now and I’m just now getting Brooklyn’s tween girl’s bedroom finished and posted. In blush, gold, and grey and with subtle bows in the design, this room is chic and modern enough but glam and vintage to give Brooklyn exactly the feel she wanted.

Back in Dallas, we gave Brooklyn her first tween bedroom makeover as she was growing from a young girl to a “tween-ager”. She wanted it to feel older but still have the little girl elements.

Now, she wants to leave some of those little girl touches and grow more towards a teenage girl room, switching out a few things here and there.

Tween Girl’s Bedroom in Blush Gold & Grey

Brooklyn actually chose the smallest bedroom in the house but she loved the location of it, facing the front. It’s a lovely way to wake up! Her large walk-in closet holds her dresser (shown in her last bedroom) and all of her clothes, shoes, and other things.

We got rid of the brass flower wall mirrors and single lamp and replaced them with this gorgeous pair of gold and ivory bow lamps from Perigold. I always find the prettiest things from Perigold’s online store! (Wait ’till you see what else I ordered from them as is on its way!) I fell in love with these lamps and really wanted them for my blush and gold office but knew they were a better fit in here. Brooklyn was thrilled.

We also painted her nightstands white to avoid too much grey, as her headboard was grey and so are the walls. (For wall paint color, click HERE.)
This is the Colette Bed from Restoration Hardware Baby & Child.

We kept these gorgeous paper wall flowers that were made for Brooklyn’s bedroom back in Dallas. Everyone loves them as much as we do.

Before the movers came to pack up our home in Dallas, I found this gorgeous new bedding for Brooklyn’s bed and threw it in one of the boxes, knowing it would be 6 months before getting to put it on her new bed.

The lumbar pillow with blush dots was found at HomeGoods and we decided we liked the bed best with that gold sequin gold bow pillow that she’s had.

It’s that perfect touch that says, “not a girl’s bedroom but not a teen’s bedroom”. So cute.

We tried one blush rug under her bead and didn’t love the look so we wen’t with white faux fur rugs on either side of the bed and it was perfect.

I made this 5-set of motivational wall art, framed in gold, for her last tween bedroom in Dallas (on Photoshop and with my Silhouette machine). She still loves them and wants to keep them a little longer so I was thrilled. If it wasn’t for that then I think I would have looked at an acrylic prints buy guide here to get her some bigger art for her walls. They look so tiny on these big walls it would have been good to get something to fill out the space a little more.

I had this chandelier in my office back in Dallas and Brooklyn wanted it for her room. It was a PBKids chandelier that I restrung myself with sparkly glass beads and then added gold glitter paint to the jute tassel and wrapping on the chandelier.

Of all the blush pink drapes we’ve tried, we finally went with this option because we liked it best.

I found this gorgeous sateen fabric at JoAnn’s Fabrics in “Rosewater” and sewed the edges, made a pocket for the curtain rod, and then kept it long enough to puddle on the floor. I love that look.

Girls White Vanity

Since she wanted her vanity out in her small bedroom, we put her dresser in the walk-in closet since it fit just fine. Funny thing…we actually wanted to get Brooklyn a new vanity for this bedroom BUT we couldn’t find the right one in our budget or made of real wood. So I fixed the drawers, gave it a new coat of paint and it’s lovely for now. The vintage mirror was a fabulous find back in Dallas and was actually in my last office. I love the detail of another gold bow in the room. We added some gold spray paint to the edges (my favorite spray paint is in this tutorial here) to brighten the dull gold and make it more modern. We did the same to this simple stool we found and then added padding and faux fur. I love the mix of modern and vintage pieces!

I’m so excited to share an update to our living room with all of you today!  When I first revealed our bright white living room after moving in last fall, I had rushed to find temporary lighting, a rug and some art for the walls.  It looked lovely but not exactly what I wanted or envisioned for that room.  Although I recently shared some fun touched to this room in my summer tour, we finally found the perfect chandelier and rug that I’d been wanting for this living room and also a fabulous new piece of art that has really brought it all together perfectly!

NEW LIVING ROOM CHANDELIER

BEFORE…..

I had most of our lighting chosen for the new house last fall as we were finishing the build of our home but I was panicking, as I really didn’t know yet what I wanted for this living room. I mean, I knew what I was envisioning but not finding it exactly.

I found this flush-mount lighting and since it had brass and some clear beaded strands for a reasonable price, I bought it to hold me over.  Our superintendent was needing our living room lighting ASAP.

AFTER…..

Do you hear angels singing?  Because I sure do!

This Crystorama Calypso 136-VG 6-Light Chandelier has the most beautiful crystal drops with a vibrant gold finish and it’s the perfect size for this living room!

I have always said that your chandelier is like the jewelry to your room and I wasn’t happy with my lighting before, but NOW….it finishes this room perfectly!  I’m so thrilled!

I love how breathtaking it is, as you walk into the living room from the entry of our home.  It definitely makes a statement and a great first impression!  My friends at Crystorama were gracious enough to partner up with me on this update to my living room and I was so thrilled because they had also collaborated with me on my Master Bathroom lighting and y’all KNOW how obsessed I’ve been with that lighting!  So many of you have gone crazy over it too!

NEW LIVING ROOM RUG

BEFORE….

The rug I previously had in our living room was beautiful.  There was nothing wrong with it at all.  It was actually good to get us through the winter months and wet feet.  But I felt it was too dark for this room.  You might disagree but last year I was in a store and found the perfect rug.  I even shared it on my Instagram stories and you all went NUTS over it and hoped I’d bought it.  But sadly….after I shared it with you, a man moved me aside to grab the rug for a customer who had asked for it.  Sad!  But I was able to find the rug I’d been dreaming of since that day.

AFTER…

It has the prettiest mix of cool ivory, beige and gray and goes so much better with this room.  It really brightens it up.  I also took the baskets out that were underneath the table.  It trapped the light from passing through and I felt like it made this entire coffee table look too dark and heavy.  But with a new rug and removing the baskets….the change was huge and now I love this space so much more!

Even Giorgio loves it!  It’s just so pretty and I’m thrilled with the difference it’s made in this room.

NEW LIVING ROOM ART

BEFORE…

When I first styled the room last fall, I couldn’t find a piece of art I was really loving specifically for this space.  I just used what I had from our last home that hadn’t been hung yet.  It was fine.

But then I met Craig Wellbrock, an artist here in the Pacific Northwest, and he sent me this piece.

I wanted one of his minimal abstract art pieces and then he went a step further to make it even more “me” and added this blush pink stripe.

Updated Living Room

I’m so pleased with how just a few small changes made such a HUGE impact on this room and gave it a whole new look!

The new chandelier and rug, along with removing those baskets under the coffee table and allowing light to pass through more freely, have all helped brighten this room and reflects more of my style and the feeling I wanted here in our living room.

In a place like here, in the Pacific Northwest that has lots of cloudy and rainy days, keeping my home bright and happy is so important.  I survived our first winter last year just fine!

Every time I’m home, no matter what the weather outside, it is bright inside and such a happy and beautiful place to be.  That’s really important to me.  I love being at home and having people over and entertaining.

The post Living Room Update: New Chandelier, Rug & Art appeared first on Summer Adams.

“Chandeliers are like the jewelry to a room,” as my friend likes to tell her clients.  And I couldn’t agree more!  It seems that with almost every client I help transform the interior of their home, chandeliers seem to be the part that takes the most time and thought.  Why?  There are so many fabulous choices and so many factors when deciding how to pick the best chandeliers for any room in your home. Get inspired to light your own spaces with these different selections I’m sharing.

First, is the size of the chandelier appropriate for the room you’ve chosen?  If it’s going above your dining table, is it hanging too low or too high?  Ballard Design says it best:

“If you’re selecting lighting for a new home and you don’t have dining room furniture yet, there’s a very simple rule you can follow. Add the length and width measurements of the room together. Your answer equals the right size diameter a chandelier should be. For example, if your dining room is 10′ x 14′, a 24″ diameter chandelier would look great.

However, if you already have a table, it’s more important to size the chandelier to the table than the room. A good rule of thumb is to make sure your chandelier is one-half to three-quarters the width of your table.

For the right hanging height, position the bottom of the chandelier about 30-32 inches above the table, adjusting to work with the size of the table and the overall scale of your space.”

When choosing the correct size of the chandelier for a space, measure the length and width of the room in feet, and add those two numbers together. For example, if your room is 8 feet wide by 12 feet long, the sum is 20 feet. Change that number to inches and you will get a number that works for the diameter of your chandelier. In this case, a chandelier with a diameter of 20 inches would work well in an 8-foot by 12-foot room. For a dining room, the chandelier should have a diameter around 12 inches less than the table is wide. It’s always better to have a chandelier that is slightly too big than too small.

Second, just as you would above the dining table, you must measure and determine the length. The taller the ceiling, the taller the chandelier can be. A foyer chandelier should hang about 7 feet off the floor, measuring from the bottom of the chandelier. For a chandelier suspended above a dining room table, there should be around 30 inches from the bottom of the chandelier to the tabletop for a dining room with an 8-foot ceiling.

Third, decide where to hang your chandelier. The location will affect the style of home lighting you choose. While most people think of chandeliers in dining rooms or a foyer, there are many other places you can hang a chandelier. Hang one with a dimmer switch over your bed in a master bedroom and turn it down to candlelight level for a romantic feel. Install a mini chandelier over a claw-foot tub in your bathroom for a touch of glamour. Consider installing mini chandeliers over a large kitchen island instead of standard pendant lights for a chic look. I like to think it make doing dishes prettier, ha!

Fourth, you should pick a style that matches the room. The chandelier should complement, not detract from, the theme of the room.  This is where you have to narrow down all your favorites and can be difficult.  And, might I add, part of this step should include to keep reminding your husband that you are NOT keeping the ceiling fan ha!  Get him a plug-in fan.

I can’t believe these words are going to leave my mouth but…..I disliked gold and brass until about 5 years ago!  {gasp!}  It’s true!  I only wore silver and I only had silver accents in my home.  And then things changed.  Gold made a comeback and all of my jewelry started to include a LOT of gold pieces.  And then this year…gold accents! I have started adding gold and brass to my kitchen and I’m going to show you how I’m doing it!

First off, if you are a regular reader and visitor here (thank you!!!) or follow me on Instagram you probably know that we’ve been moving around a lot with my husband’s company and have been renters.  Luckily, our next move is permanent.  Until then, we’ve had to find rentals that are nice and homes that we can easily make our own.  I change out all of the light fixtures and install my own chandeliers, paint walls if homeowner approves, and do what I can to make it feel like “home”.  While this home is not my favorite, it’s a great home in a really great neighborhood.  However, we don’t get a lot of natural sunlight toward the back half of the home AND the homeowner used a grey paint that I feel is just too dark for my liking.

I wrote a post about tips for brightening your home HERE, and these tips certainly help!  But alas, I’m going to paint my kitchen, nook and living room white I think…next week.  Those are the rooms on the back half of the home that feel like a dungeon at certain times of the day.  They even have a lot of windows…just not facing the right way.  I needed something BOLD to break up the monotony of grey and white.  It looked like a black and white film in this area haha!  I decided, instead of a pop of color (mostly because the grey is so much), I brought in some fabulous GOLD and BRASS accents.

First task, the barstools!  They were the silver industrial barstools that are very popular right now but I was getting so bored of them.  I happened upon these barstools somehow online a few weeks ago and knew that’s what I wanted!

They’re gorgeous and well-priced.  But I also don’t want to buy new furniture until our permanent move next year when we are in our new home.  So I went and bought a BUNCH of different gold spray paints and tried them out.  Ugh, I’ve done something like this before and remembered how hard it was to find the right gold. Some are too orange or brown or a funky brass look.  This one was too muted….

It’s a pretty gold and I love muted gold.  But NOT for this project.  Nope!

I actually used this same one (NOW I remember) on my fabulous IKEA hack coffee table shared HERE but I’m going to go back and use the new one (below) and go over it with this better gold.  I tried a BUNCH of others but THIS was the one!  You can see the other {muted} gold in the background and then the new Rustoleum metallic gold here.  The difference is much more noticeable in person. Note, they are both Rustoleum brand so you need to make sure you buy the green and white can with the gold metallic top.  And I suggest buying the 6-pack I linked below because you’ll definitely go through them all if you’re doing your bar stools and accent pieces.

Don’t they look great in my kitchen?!  It’s just what this kitchen needed and will look even prettier when I get rid of these dark grey walls (also darker in person….I’ve brightened the photo just a bit).

I removed the 80’s light fixture above the kitchen nook table (cringe) and installed this gorgeous Lillian Chandelier and then also did a “recess canned light to pendant light conversion” with THIS KIT and hung a matching chandelier above my kitchen island as well.  These Lillian Chandeliers are from Wayfair (sister company to Joss & Main) and they give just the touch of glam I needed here.

I originally wanted those gorgeous brass pendant lantern light fixtures that are so popular right now but I’m going to save them for my next home so that I have something to look forward to.  That is, unless my taste has changed by then ha!  It usually does, but we will see.

I grabbed my spray paint again and spray painted my paper towel holder and I love it!  The painting in the background is by yours truly (my first attempt at art in years so don’t judge haha) and I found this awesome vintage frame with the gold, ornate inner frame at a vintage shop in Downtown McKinney, Texas.

It flows well with the room off my kitchen, my living room, as I added gold in there as well (also getting painted white next week).

Since it’s fall, I added little white pumpkins to this gorgeous brass hurricane I found at Home Goods and it made for a gorgeous centerpiece coupled with these simple place settings of white and gold pieces.

This is where we eat dinner as a family most nights.  If we have company, and often do, we move into our formal dining room.

My bowl of fruit gets put in a lovely brass bowl with a couple of other fun coordinating pieces…

I swapped out a stainless steel holder to a brass lantern to hold some of my cooking utensils next to my stove.  You can get creative!  I love love love these new white and gold canisters from Global Amici, part of their new line just released. Look for these at Home Goods or I have linked them below for your shopping convenience.  There are four of them: flour, sugar, coffee and tea.  I separated mine.

So there you go!  I love the way this gold brought that WOW factor that this space needed.  I can’t wait to paint the walls white and then even add a pop of color after the holidays. I think it will be stunning!

It may be a rainy, cloudy day in Dallas but it is BRIGHT and cheery inside this home!  If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, I am SURE you know how much I love a pretty chandelier (aka chandy, as I often call it).  Upon moving into this rental, which is our home for the next 1-2 years, I moved chandeliers around, sold some, bought new ones and tried to decide what kind of chandeliers worked in each room in our home.  Yes, each room….or almost.    This fabulous chandelier makeover is exactly what this space needed and it didn’t cost much at all!  >>*And for those of you NOT interested in a DIY project, I’ve chosen a bunch of fabulous similar chandeliers that you can shop at the end of this post!<<

First off, I want to show you my inspiration for this project when I was shopping for chandies and just not finding what I wanted (or wanted to spend) on this kitchen nook since I may not even want the same thing in our next {permanent} home.  I loved Jenni’s from Dear Lillie that she bought a couple of years ago and decided that I loved that vintage, textured look of the chandelier body and arms but I loved the crystals as well.  I didn’t want anything shiny in this space.

But I also loved this one she used chalk paint on to give a makeover as well (more the shape of the chandelier I found) several years ago.  So I combined the two!

Now, let’s examine the “before” photo of the ad I saw on Craigslist (please forgive the photo quality)t:

This chandy is exactly what I was looking for. Popular in the 90’s and early 2000’s, it is now very outdated but NOT to be thrown away!  Find something like this on your local Facebook neighborhood “for sale” pages or on Craigslist (remember to be safe and meet them in a public place).  I talked this lady down to $15 and (I tried $10) and it’s in excellent working condition.  Here is another old 80’s brassy chandelier that everyone on Craigslist is trying to get rid of and easy to find.  You might even find it under the free section often:

If you’ve found something like these above, you’ve struck gold!  Ok now, on to the easy instructions to turn this old piece into something new and lovely……
Take out the light bulbs and take off the candle covers OR you can just tape around the bottom if you wish, as I did since there is no spray painting involved.  I use my favorite painter’s tape to cover that electrical area and also the very ends of the wires.  You may want to cover the entire chain/wires also, unless you intend to paint them or make a chandelier cover for it.

Grab a good paintbrush (yes, a better quality brush always makes a difference) and the chalk paint you choose to use as the main color.  I know there are a lot of ASCP (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint) fans out there and I do love it.  BUT, I’ve found a newer company called MudPaint and I’m looooving their chalk paint!  It’s less expensive and every bit just as good as ASCP.  They recommended I use “Stone” which is close to the ASCP “Paris Grey” and you can buy it HERE!

This next product is the key to this vintage french country look of the chandelier….It is called SaltWash and you mix a little into your chalk paint or “glob” it all over (pour just the amount you think you’ll use in a separate container or bowl so that you are not mixing the entire paint with the SaltWash) to give it that chunky texture and it is sooooo easy!  HERE is the quick and easy video tutorial and then you’ll just paint that all over your chandelier and let it dry as instructed. I am absolutely OBSESSED with this product! I can’t wait to paint other pieces with these 2 products!

About an hour later when it was mostly dry, I went back and added very little chalk paint to the brush and dry-brushed it on all over the chandelier very very lightly so that you only see brush strokes. (This picture shows chandelier swag but it was not on at this point.)
At this point, it is optional if you want to add a clear wax but isn’t necessary.  If you do, dab it on lightly with an old, soft rag or t-shirt.  Then, you can grab some crystal chandelier swag and measure and decide how long you want each swag to be.  I used 16 prisms for my length.  I already had a lot from other projects that I’d bought for almost nothing at yard sales and antique stores.  You can also order them from Etsy or Amazon at a low price.  Open one end and attach around the base of each bobeche.

Take a small piece of paddle wire and twist around the other end’s split-ring and then bend over your finger and “hook” onto top of chandelier.  This will stay!  AND it makes it easy to remove from the top if you want to spray it with water and dust/clean it with a cloth every now and then.  Oh, and I happened to have a round chandelier prism so I dropped that from the bottom as well. It was the perfect touch.

Your last step is to install your chandelier (soooo easy, I can do it myself) and enjoy!  This truly looks like an expensive piece from the popular home stores!  And with enough materials leftover, you could do several chandeliers.  Make them for other rooms of your home in different colors or make them as gifts or to sell!

Note: You do not have to add crystal swag.  If you are looking for a simpler or more rustic look, just skip that part!  It would still be lovely.  Y’all know I can’t resist a little sparkle though!
