Each year during the month leading up to Valentine’s Day, my family loves the tradition of a candy bar buffet.  It sounds silly, but having it available makes the kids want candy less. Crazy, right?! Also, from October to March (during those chilly months), I like to have a hot cocoa bar cart set up for the kids and their friends and other guests as well. Having both of these areas adorned with cute banners is such a fun part of holidays.  I made Valentine’s Day DIY hot cocoa bar and candy bar pennant banners and wanted to offer them as free printables here on the blog as well to share with all of you. Read on below for easy instructions!

So here’s my hot cocoa bar pennant banner.  I really had fun creating the little graphics with the whipped cream and marshmallows and darling little mug with a heart.

Here’s my candy buffet pennant banner. The pics don’t do it justice but the heart sucker, hard candy and pink heart chocolate graphics are just even cuter in person!

I also found this heart-embossed pink paper at Michael’s.

Supplies:
All you’ll need is white card stock, pink card stock, your printer, scissors and/or paper cutter, thin ribbon, glue or permanent scrapbook adhesive, mini hole punch, 2 1/2″ circle punch, string/twine, tape (if you want to center and keep paper on twine). Optional: Iridescent glitter, glue, and small paint brush OR Valentine print ribbon (as a top trim on banner).

Here’s what I did. First, print out each sheet of 2″ circles from the links below.

Next, use a 2 1/2″ circle punch to punch them out or a scallop is cute too. Then I used my paper cutter to make the pennant banner flags about 4″ high and 3 1/4″ wide with a 45º angle to the center from each bottom corner.  I didn’t want to go up very far. You can decide how far you want to go up. I liked going up 1/2″.

Adhere the circle to the pennant. Mini hole-punch each top corner and use twine or string of choice going down one corner and up through the opposite.  Once you have the entire thing done and centered, you can tape the back so that it stays in place.

This is optional but I like to brush the top of the banner with glue and iridescent glitter (I’ll even layer it on the hot cocoa banner to look like sparkly snow) for a fun effect.  You can also add a small ribbon trim instead and punch the holes for the twine a little lower.

Tie ribbon on each end of banner and hang it at desired location. I used mini clear 3M hooks and then attached the candy banner to my mirror and then just used tape to hang my hot cocoa banner on my bar cart. Easy peasy!

Valentine’s Day is my very favorite holiday (after Christmas). Have so much fun printing these and hanging them for your friends and family to enjoy all the sweets! Welcome to the second week of the Seasonal Simplicity Christmas Series! Today a group of my blogging friends and I are sharing our DIY Gift Ideas to help inspire you for the upcoming holiday season.  My closest girlfriends are like me. They appreciate pretty things with sparkle and bling.  I love adding special ornaments to gifts at Christmas time.  I made these DIY glam rhinestone bow ornaments and knew I had to share them with all of you on the blog and knew they’d also be the perfect gift idea too!

I’ve always thought that there needed to be someone who made big pretty sparkly ornaments with big bows.  I saw some on Etsy last year but they were really expensive with high shipping prices from Eastern Europe so I knew this year I would just finally sit down and make my own like I’d planned on.

They were so easy and fun.  They just take some patience because there are a few parts.  This is where you make some tea or hot cocoa and turn on some of your favorite Hallmark Christmas movies and craft away.

Supplies:

•Box of ornaments (I chose these matte ivory ornaments. Buy online and pick them up.)
•Double face satin ribbon 7/8″
•Scissors
•Hot Glue Gun
•Tweezers
•Needle and thread
• Small Rhinestone Center (can’t be very heavy, keep it light)
•E-6000 Glue
•Simplicity Gold Apparel Rhinestone Trim (from JoAnn Fabric but this, this, and this could be great alternatives)
•Hand towel doubled over (and then again on the back half) to work on
•Gold Shadow Flatback Swarovski Crystals 34ss
•Clear Flatback Swarovski Crystals 16ss and also 20ss
•Gold ornament hooks

Instructions:

First, cut a desired amount of ribbon to make a double-layered bow. Use your needle and thread to stitch it through the center and wrap around and pull it tight and tie it off. I make them all at once and set aside.

Next (and forgive me but I forgot to photograph this part) cut a small inch of ribbon and fold the outsides toward the center, putting the raw edges in back. Lightly hot glue against the bow and wrap ends around the back of bow and hot glue as well. Then center and hot glue back of bow against silver top of ornament.

Cut piece of rhinestone trim and hot glue from top side of ornament and down the side, center of the bottom, and up the other side until it meets the silver top again.  Make sure it’s pulled tight.

Then, face down, cut a piece of trim and hot glue from the bottom of the center up to the top.

Find the very center, from top to bottom and side to side, and softly put a dot there.

This is where you’ll hot glue your rhinestone gem/bead.

Once the hot glue is dry and you know the center piece won’t shift and slide, use your tweezers to grab the golden flatback crystals and lightly dip them in the E-6000 glue. Carefully place one on the top and bottom of center rhinestone piece. Then add the crystal 20ss size and then the 16ss size on the outer edges of that one.

 

On the sides, you’ll just use the clear crystals, 2 larger and 2 to 3 smaller. Then place one of each in descending order in the corners.

It’s super easy but isn’t that beautiful?!!!!

It looks so pretty hanging on a Christmas tree or sitting by itself in a box.  So here’s the question….

Will you keep them all for yourself or give them away as gifts? Haha!  It’s hard to part with them…they’re soooo pretty!  So do what I do. Make a set to give away, and one to keep!

You can give an entire set to a friend or you can break them up and give a few at a time or even just one in a single box (maybe along with some other gifts too). I’m thinking this would be the most beautiful ornament to bring for an ornament exchange, wouldn’t it?!!  The girls would DIE!!

How To Beautifully Repurpose Designer Shopping Bags

You gotta know…
When you’re paying for anything “designer”, you’re not just paying more for the high-quality item. You’re also paying for the label, or their name.  So why not keep the packaging and repurpose it?

I have several Chanel bags in my closet, as well as other designer bags and boxes, so I thought I’d put them to good use.

I wanted to do something fun in my blush pink office with a floral arrangement recently. I brought one of my favorite trays out, this luxurious leopard-print tray, and added two smaller glass cylinder vases with pink roses and baby’s breath and then placed them carefully in this Chanel shopping bag.  I thought it looked very chic on a stack of Megan Hess books (especially the Coco Chanel book and Paris book), with a vintage string of pearls and another designer candle.  Isn’t that so pretty?!  The possibilities are endless!  You can really get creative with your vignettes.

I also had a couple of gifts to deliver and wanted to use some bright pink, so I pulled out my Victoria’s Secret bags and Kate Spade bags.  Tiffany bags would be cute too and Louis Vuitton….so many different ideas!

I dropped off some fresh flowers, sparkling cider and rose lemonade to a friend in this Victoria’s Secret shopping bag and she just loved it.  It was so bright and happy and perfectly pink!

Another fun gift idea was delivering some flowers in this Kate Spade gift bag, or shopping bag.  You can put a small glass vase in there with a small amount of water if you want OR you can just wrap the bottom in plastic wrap and tissue paper to keep the bag from getting wet and tearing.

Helpful Tip: If the flowers are going to be out of water for a while (maybe you’re taking it to a restaurant to give to someone or driving a ways), you could put some water in a ziplock bag and put the stems in there and then rubberband around it, to keep the water from leaking.  I’d also add some tissue paper around it.  But it’s a really good ideas because you don’t want your pretty flowers to die that you’re gifting to your friend.

How to Beautifully Repurpose Designer Candles

Diptyque Paris Candles are all the rage these days.  I’ve been a fan for several years now.  I have them in the largest sizes, the regular sizes, and I’ve purchased and received several of the mini gift-set sizes as well.  They’re really nice-smelling candles and they are also great to use after they have been burned.  You can use them as vases, like I did above with this large size.

After burning and using all the candle, you can freeze them for several hours and then pull out the wax and clean it out!

 

This empty “Roses” Diptyque candle jar was especially cute to use at Valentine’s Day in my entry as a vase.

This was another cute vignette I made at Valentine’s with this vase but is perfect for year-round decor.  So cute, right?!

It’s cute alone but I especially love it stacked on a beautiful set of fashion books or also beautiful floral books, like these favorites of mine, Dahlias and Vintage Roses, by my dear friend Georgianna Lane.

In the little corner of my butler’s pantry, I used a mini size candle jar from a Diptyque gift set as a vase and created a cute little vignette.

Another darling idea for the empty Diptyque jars in the mini size is to use it in your office to hold little things.  I am using it to hold my jumbo brass paper clips.  Cute, right?!  You can see more of my glam blush pink office HERE.  I made my own “Press for Diet Coke” faux door bell.

I use the standard size empty Diptyque candle jar on my perfume stand on my vanity to hold a few of my favorite lipsticks that I use constantly (and have duplicates of because I can’t live without them).  I like using the large size (this is a rare Roses one I bought off eBay) to put all my Scentbird scents in.  It’s not only practical and functional but it’s also very stylish and chic!  Oh, and it’s environmentally-friendly too so that’s a bonus!

Other fun uses for empty Diptyque Candle Jars can include holding the following:

Cotton rounds

Q-tips

Rings

Other makeup like lipgloss or lip and eye pencils

Nail polishes

Makeup brushes

Pens & Pencils

Matches

Bobby pins or hair clips

Small toiletries

Washi tape

Hot glue gun sticks

Sewing notions (safety pins, etc)

Office supplies

While receiving is fun, I much more prefer to give gifts.  I really enjoy putting together thoughtful gifts over just buying something on a list and checking it off.  Of course, when I’m Christmas shopping or putting together any kind of gift, it’s always more fun when it’s something I would like and would want as well.  Clearly, from the picture above of me and Brooklyn, I love pink and I love to bake.  We both do.

This gift idea seems like the best idea because I know I’d be thrilled to receive it.  My favorite things in my kitchen are all the pretty things that I use to bake and cook with.

So I figured I’d start with a pink mixing bowl, added a cute pink kitchen towel on the bottom (not shown) to prop all the items up, a pink rolling pin, pink whisks and measuring spoons and other pink kitchen utensils.  I also found some cute pink marble cupcake liners, some sparkly sugar sprinkles, pink macarons (these can be homemade or purchased from a bakery but I have a fabulous recipe HERE), a pink candle that looks like a macaron, a pink nutcracker since it’s Christmas and then…

…these printable recipe cards with a cute pink Kitchen-aid stand mixer on it.  It’s simple and adorable, useful and thoughtful, and I truly believe that any girl who loves pink and loves to bake will simply ADORE this gift!

**Idea!  You could also include (in pink) a hand mixer, stand mixer, pink ornaments, pink mixing spoons, pink pot holders, pink kitchen hand soaps/lotions, pink apron, pink cake stand or cupcake stand, pink pots and pans (if going for a larger gift idea – I especially like this idea for a newlywed or new homemaker), pink toaster, pink blender, pink coffee maker, and any other fun pink kitchen accessory or small appliance you can think of!  Does she not like pink? Do the gift in her favorite color!**

Today is going to be fun because I’m not only sharing with you my DIY glitter ornaments for one of my new trees, but a group of my friends are also joining me for another Seasonal Simplicity Christmas Series Blog Hop to share their DIY ornaments and Christmas crafts also.  I’m so glad you are here today!

I’m not revealing my second tree (in my living room) until next week but you’ll get a sneak peek today because the ornaments I made were for this particular tree.  I wanted a flocked tree with a lot of white but also pops of dusty blue and a soft peachy-blush.  While I was fortunate to find some Christmas poinsettia stems in those colors this year, I didn’t find any ornaments.  I wanted to combine those two colors and also a little gold too, as I have some gold snowflakes on the tree and a lot of brass and gold accents in this room.

My daughter, Brooklyn, and I love to bake and craft together so she and I sat downstairs at the table one night and made some ornaments while Beckham, my son, decided to not make any but sit on the sofa and watch a Hallmark Christmas movie with us.  It was fun! 

Ok, I found a box of pearlized ornaments for just a few dollars and I loved those and knew they’d be fun to glitter and paint on.

I had left over blush interior paint from my last blush office makeover so I used that to paint some fun and different designs.  Here’s this one “snow dripping” looks like one on my other tree (that I purchased).

Of course, because I love sparkle, I grabbed my sparkly white fine craft glitter from my craft room to sprinkle on the painted designs immediately after painting each section.

I did a mix of the pink and white in all different designs.

I also had some glitter glue with a fine tip so that made this next little design much easier to do.

I drew on some little holly branches and sprinkles fine craft glitter in gold on them.

I hung it on a small tree with no ornaments so that it would dry.  A half hour later, I used the end of the little paint brush to dip it in the blush paint and dot it on the “branches” and make the holly berries and then set it back on that other tree to dry for another hour.

To add that dusty blue color, I grabbed some thin velvet ribbon and tied a little piece on each ornament and then hung it on my tree.  

Isn’t that cute?!  It was soooo easy and I had everything at home except for the ornaments.  

It just tied in my color scheme so nicely and brought it all together in the smallest and simplest way.

Just a boring mask

This mask came as just a plain black mask but I forgot to take the picture until after I’d attached the feather.

I love crafting, sitting and making something.  I rarely have time to do it these days so I’m so glad that Krista from The Happy Housie got a bunch of us bloggers together to share something fun for Halloween.  I love having fun with Halloween decor.  I have had this dollar store eye mask that my kids have ran around wearing when they were little and now it sits on pumpkins and skeletons and…it’s fun.  But…it’s plain.  I don’t do “plain” very well.  I keep saying I’ll give it a makeover but I haven’t.  Until now.

10-Minute Glam Halloween Masquerade Mask

Materials:
-plain mask (try dollar store or party store)
-long feather or feather stem
-rhinestones of 1 or 2 sizes in preferred color (I used grey swarovski crystals with a flat back)
-ribbon
-hot glue gun
-tweezers
-scissors

I found the cutest blush pink feather stems at Joanns this year so I bought a bunch of them to use throughout my decor.  I cut off the stem, hot-glued it onto the back, and covered with black felt so that it didn’t scratch whatever or whomever it was on.

Use tweezers to grab each rhinestone and put a small dot of hot glue on the back and then place it wherever you want. You can do a LOT more rhinestones but I wanted to keep this at 10 minutes.  Make sure not to put too much glue on the back of the rhinestones.

I then made a couple of loops with this lace ribbon I had and let the second one hang down like a tail.  Pinch the neck of it (just below the two loops) and put a small 1-inch piece of ribbon around it with some hot glue to cover where you pinched it. Attach it right in front of the mask corner (where the feather sticks out) with a dab of hot glue.

Add a few more rhinestones on top of that cinched part to finish it off.  That’s it!

Again, you can get much more elaborate BUT I wanted to keep it at 10 minutes and sometimes less is more.  Did I just say that?  Haha.  I usually say “the more the merrier” but not in this case.

I placed my mask on this cute ceramic pumpkin stand I found at HomeGoods years ago but stay tuned to see who else will be wearing it…..hint, hint!

I used this mask and pumpkin stand in the vignette on my buffet.  Cute, right?!  So much more glam than just a plain ‘ole black mask.  I can’t believe it took me 3 years to get around to this little craft that took only 10 minutes.

I’m excited to be joining a group of over 20 other talented bloggers who are also sharing a Fall DIY wreath tutorial with you!  Thanks to our friend Krista from The Happy Housie for hosting this Seasonal Simplicity Series and getting us all together!  Today I’m going to show you an easy tutorial for a Two-step DIY Fall Wreath.

Earlier this spring, I created this pretty spring wreath for our front door.  I’ve kept it up all spring and summer long and honestly….I still love it and wish I could keep it up for fall.  The only problem is that it definitely screams “spring!”  I decided I’d change that in just 2 steps.

Step 1 for the two-step diy fall wreath

1- Grab the wreath that you want to transform into a fall wreath.  Find some mini white styrofoam pumpkins (I found a small bag of them in the dollar section of Target for about $3) and insert wooden skewers through the bottom.

You can break off most of the skewer and stick the pumpkin and about 4 inches of the skewer into the wreath and hot glue it in.  I used about 6 pumpkins and placed them throughout one side of my asymmetrical wreath.  You can use twice as many if you’re doing an entire wreath.

Step 2 for the two-step diy fall wreath

2 – Replace any elements of your wreath that is not “fall” with fall floral stems.

For my wreath, I removed the spring stems of white flowers and limelight hydrangeas and grabbed some ivory fall floral stems that I found at Michael’s.

They were only $3 on sale which means that it’s only cost $6 total for a fall wreath.

I can remove the fall elements in the spring and put those spring stems (that I just removed) back in.  It’s so versatile and I love it!

My sweet friend was at one of our local farms the other day and texted me to tell me that the farmer’s wife found a handful of white pumpkins so she brought them home to me.

Until there are a lot more white pumpkins available, and some big enough for my stacked-pumpkin urn topiaries, I’m keeping my white nantucket planters with the ferns.  I think it’s perfect for now and I have fern pieces in my wreath so they go well together.

So that’s it!  Just 2 easy steps in my two-step DIY fall wreath.  Add your little white pumpkins and replace any spring stems with fall stems.

Fall decor doesn’t have to mean oranges and browns. I like to find ways to add touches of glam and pink in any season. I decided I wanted to make some candle wreaths for Fall.  All of the candle wreaths I’ve seen are only done in oranges and browns.  That won’t go well in my home and it just isn’t me.

I started by running to Michael’s and grabbing some stem wire, pretty fall stems, and then I already had floral wire and green floral tape.  I really liked the light ivory leaves with a taupe/brown/mauve splash to them.  I grabbed blush fall rose stems also.  The berries shown, well….I bought them “just in case” but I changed my mind and left them out.

Then, because I wanted a little more “glam”, they had some sparkly rose gold leaf stems in a small Christmas section of Michaels that they’d just put out so I grabbed those too.

So here’s what you do…..

Simple steps to make your own DIY  Fall Glam Candle Wreaths

1.  Bend the stem wire in a circle around the candle and barely overlap the ends to see where you need to cut it.  Don’t make it so small that it hugs the candle.  You want some room in between because you’ll add to the stem wire with other stems and wire and floral tape.

2.  I started with the leaves and cutting them off individually from the stem and then using 2″ pieces of floral wire to attach them around the stem wire ring that you created in Step 1.

This is just with the white leaves. You’ll want to add the sparkly leaves in between the white leaves.

3.  Do the same thing the sparkly leaves, attaching them in between the whiter leaves.

4.  Take the green floral tape and wrap it around the wires all the way around.

5.  Add 3 larger roses (or whatever floral stem you’ve chosen). I even added the smaller buds in between some of the larger roses.

6.  Repeat Steps 2 and 3.

Voila! You’re done!  That’s seriously ALL you do!  Easy, right?!  It just takes a little time to figure out how you want it arranged but other than that, it was simple to just attach all the stems on the ring. I don’t think it took me more than 15 minutes per candle wreath.

One candle and candle wreath was lovely on my buffet.

And it looked so cute with this darling little velvet pumpkin.

But of course I had to make 2 more wreaths for my trio of candlesticks.

I’m already imagining how these will look on my dining table during dinner so…..

I threw them on there to see how they’d look under that crystal chandelier.

Yep.  I like it.  It’ll be pretty during our fall dinners.  What do you think?

This is our first official spring here in the Pacific Northwest and it is quite different than spring back in Texas.  In 3 words I’ll just say…..

It is glorious!!!

The weather is absolutely perfect!  Everything is green and flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, it’s mostly sunny but a rain here and there to cool things off, we’ve been playing and gardening outside and taking walks and picnic-ing.  It’s truly been lovely!  I just shared the very beginning stage of my backyard last week and the French-inspired back patio (that’s already had a bunch of new changes).  So now it’s time to work on the front and share it with you!

For the front door of our Craftsman-style home, I wanted to create a wreath for the spring and summer that was full of greenery to compliment the new white planter boxes and ferns I planted.

I ran to my nearest craft store, which was Michaels, and grabbed a grapevine wreath that was on sale for about $10.  I also grabbed a variety of spring faux greenery stems that were 50% off.  I can’t really tell you how many stems to get because it’s up to you and how full you want to make it.

I would just say to grab a few of each variety and then do like I did and take back what you don’t use.  I grabbed a few different varieties of faux fern stems, eucalyptus, and boxwood.

Now, I made a DIY Boxwood & Magnolia Wreath back in Texas a couple of years ago and had to use twine and floral wire to start securing those stems to the grapevine.  That’s because it was sooooo hot in Texas that if I had used hot glue, it would have melted off the wreath on those hottest summer days and fallen apart.

But now that we’re in the Pacific Northwest, and since our door is shaded and not directly in the sun, I went ahead and clipped stems and started hot-gluing them on to the wreath like crazy.  A month later, with heavy rain and wind here and there, it’s holding up perfectly fine.

For the asymmetrical look, just choose one side you want cover and which direction you want to go and then work around, piece by piece and top to bottom.

I also grabbed a few little bunches of faux snowball stems and other little greenish-white flower stems and added a few touches on there.  I had to add some floral but I didn’t want to go overboard on this particular design and take away from all the pretty fern varieties and other stems.

Since I have black on my front porch door mat and black metal porch lights (see more on those here), I wanted to tie that all in with some thick black and white striped wired ribbon.  So I created a big bow and fastened that on with floral wire.

I really like the way that looks!  I think it turned out nicely and I’m really loving the asymmetrical look.  It’s definitely different than my last DIY wreath but still green and fresh-looking!

I ordered these white Nantucket-style planter boxes for my front door and drilled a couple more holes in the bottom and they’re perfect!  I love the look!  I chose to plant ferns in them because A) they’re inexpensive B) will grow quite a bit and look nice and full C) you water them a lot the first week and then they are totally easy maintenance after that and D) they tolerate all that shade really well.

I still have more flowers to plant in the front yard this week, as I’ve been giving so much attention to the backyard.  And wait until you see what I’m adding in between my garages!  But anyway, I love the way this simple DIY wreath looks with the planters on my front porch.  What do you think?
