Summer Backyard & Patio

Last week I shared our summer backyard in this post, as it’s our 2nd summer in this house, and we’ve made a few updates.

You can read more about our new patio awning here and also our new umbrella we love too!

They make summer dining so much more fun and I plan on entertaining a lot this summer!  We have 2 other outdoor spaces in the works but with some new unexpected health issues since May, they had to be put on hold.  Hoping we might get to them before we leave to Europe this summer.  Crossing my fingers!

Easy Summer Dining

We eat out on the patio most nights this time of year.  Here in the Pacific Northwest, it actually cools down in the evenings and we have the prettiest view of the sunset behind our home so we love eating out back.

These melamine plates above are our favorite (linked at end of post too).  They’re so easy to take out back and they just wash and rinse off so quickly and are so easy to use most nights.  The cute melamine pink goblets are from HomeGoods and I found them in blue also and bought them in several different sizes (goblets, tall and small tumblers) for outdoor dining.

I found the cutest pink plasticware and at HomeGoods and also this caddy that I use and keep this and other plasticware or flatware in so we can just grab it and take it outside.  It makes dinner time so easy.

These plates again!  You can mix and match them with so many different things to make different place settings.  They’re so darling and so versatile!  I also love these hobnail melamine goblets.  They’re another summer dining staple of mine.

I love pulling out all my fun plates and mixing fun summery colors, whether we are eating indoors or outdoor, for summer dining. 

I have soooo many different plates, especially for spring and summer, so I like to make a point to pull them out since we aren’t rushing around in the summer.  

This pretty blue dress is one of my new favorite summer dresses.  I’ve been a big fan of Rachel Parcell’s dresses and own almost a dozen of them.  This blue dress is so light, airy, feminine, and has the prettiest ruffled sleeves and layers.  It’s so comfortable and so flattering!

 

I like to be a little more thoughtful about setting a simple but lovely table for my family and especially for friends when they come and join us.  I love using the plates and napkins in my cabinets and not just saving them for a blog post or a special occasion.  That doesn’t make sense to me.

Summer Living Room

Guess what?  My summer living room is staying exactly the same! I changed it for spring and love the blush and green so much that it’s staying.

The only thing I was going to change was the custom drapes that are being made for the downstairs but they’re not finished yet.  Stay tuned for that.  I’m so excited to share those with you!

Pink and green is so fresh, don’t you think?!  Last year I did pink and blue and loved it but really wanted something different and new this year.

I don’t know why I was so nervous about the green….maybe because I’d never decorated with it before.  Ok not true…I did about 11 years ago but it’s been forever.  But green with the blush….oh I just loved it.

 

Summer Kitchen

My summer kitchen means two things…..fresh flowers and fresh fruit.  All the time.  Yep.  We love it.

I just cut the rest of the peonies off of my peony bushes and brought them inside.  I have a large rose garden too and many other types of flowers in my garden so I love cutting them and bringing them in.  I don’t grow my own fruit yet (planted my first apple and lemon trees) but we go and pick our own fruit here at all the orchards around town and have TONS of fruit constantly.  It’s heavenly!

Summer Entry Way – New Hand-painted Chinoiserie Framed Panels

I love this warm glow in my entry in the summer afternoons!  This long lace kimono and a light blue pair of denim is the perfect go-to for an evening out (since it’s not so hot in the evenings) like a concert in the park, dinner out on the restaurant patio, dinner and shopping downtown…whatever.  It’s light and feminine and very summery.

My friends from the Collective and Company reached out to me earlier this year and introduced their GORGEOUS hand-painted chinoiserie panels to me.  I was so excited to receive these beautiful panels in my home and knew exactly where they’d go.  I’d been looking for the perfect art work for a year and a half since we moved in here.  

 

They are even more gorgeous in person and come in several different color options.  My largest ginger jar with faux dogwood branches at the top of the first stair landing was a beautiful compliment to the panels.

They make such a dramatic and stunning statement when you walk in the door now.  It’s exactly what this entry needed!!!!

I changed my entry from pink and blue to this gorgeous light seafoam or spa blue color and some darker blue accents.

 Did you see my Instagram stories the other day?  This was my ugly Salvation Army ginger jar for $2.49 (it was yellow and green sunflower-patterned) and I hand-painted it a white-blue ombre with acrylic and chalk paint I had here at home.  I love how it turned out for my entry!

 

I found this darling bird at Canon Beach at a boutique on Spring Break.  It’s perfect for my new entry!

This new ornate candle holder from HomeGoods was also the perfect addition for my entry.  I have a new runner on the way for my entry and new bench that both arrive by Friday so I’ll update this post with them AND share them on Instagram so stay tuned for that.  Other than that and this candle holder, I didn’t want to buy any new decor for the summer.  I wanted to shop my home and move things around.  Speaking of….

I brought this chair down from the bonus room (that has also been in the family room) and switched out what was here to give a fresh new look.  I’m loving it!  Do you ever “shop your home” and move stuff around?  It’s a great way to save money and a great way to re-love your things again when you get sick of your spaces.

Simple white summer dresses, sandals, messy buns, and straw totes are a great summer staple!  I’ll link a bunch of great summer white dresses below.  This was my favorite from last year but there are so many cute ones for sale online right now that I’m tempted to buy.  (How many white sundresses does a girl need?  haha) Oh, and don’t forget big earrings!  I love big earrings with a messy bun.

How To Beautifully Repurpose Designer Shopping Bags

You gotta know…
When you’re paying for anything “designer”, you’re not just paying more for the high-quality item. You’re also paying for the label, or their name.  So why not keep the packaging and repurpose it?

I have several Chanel bags in my closet, as well as other designer bags and boxes, so I thought I’d put them to good use.

I wanted to do something fun in my blush pink office with a floral arrangement recently. I brought one of my favorite trays out, this luxurious leopard-print tray, and added two smaller glass cylinder vases with pink roses and baby’s breath and then placed them carefully in this Chanel shopping bag.  I thought it looked very chic on a stack of Megan Hess books (especially the Coco Chanel book and Paris book), with a vintage string of pearls and another designer candle.  Isn’t that so pretty?!  The possibilities are endless!  You can really get creative with your vignettes.

I also had a couple of gifts to deliver and wanted to use some bright pink, so I pulled out my Victoria’s Secret bags and Kate Spade bags.  Tiffany bags would be cute too and Louis Vuitton….so many different ideas!

I dropped off some fresh flowers, sparkling cider and rose lemonade to a friend in this Victoria’s Secret shopping bag and she just loved it.  It was so bright and happy and perfectly pink!

Another fun gift idea was delivering some flowers in this Kate Spade gift bag, or shopping bag.  You can put a small glass vase in there with a small amount of water if you want OR you can just wrap the bottom in plastic wrap and tissue paper to keep the bag from getting wet and tearing.

Helpful Tip: If the flowers are going to be out of water for a while (maybe you’re taking it to a restaurant to give to someone or driving a ways), you could put some water in a ziplock bag and put the stems in there and then rubberband around it, to keep the water from leaking.  I’d also add some tissue paper around it.  But it’s a really good ideas because you don’t want your pretty flowers to die that you’re gifting to your friend.

How to Beautifully Repurpose Designer Candles

Diptyque Paris Candles are all the rage these days.  I’ve been a fan for several years now.  I have them in the largest sizes, the regular sizes, and I’ve purchased and received several of the mini gift-set sizes as well.  They’re really nice-smelling candles and they are also great to use after they have been burned.  You can use them as vases, like I did above with this large size.

After burning and using all the candle, you can freeze them for several hours and then pull out the wax and clean it out!

 

This empty “Roses” Diptyque candle jar was especially cute to use at Valentine’s Day in my entry as a vase.

This was another cute vignette I made at Valentine’s with this vase but is perfect for year-round decor.  So cute, right?!

It’s cute alone but I especially love it stacked on a beautiful set of fashion books or also beautiful floral books, like these favorites of mine, Dahlias and Vintage Roses, by my dear friend Georgianna Lane.

In the little corner of my butler’s pantry, I used a mini size candle jar from a Diptyque gift set as a vase and created a cute little vignette.

Another darling idea for the empty Diptyque jars in the mini size is to use it in your office to hold little things.  I am using it to hold my jumbo brass paper clips.  Cute, right?!  You can see more of my glam blush pink office HERE.  I made my own “Press for Diet Coke” faux door bell.

I use the standard size empty Diptyque candle jar on my perfume stand on my vanity to hold a few of my favorite lipsticks that I use constantly (and have duplicates of because I can’t live without them).  I like using the large size (this is a rare Roses one I bought off eBay) to put all my Scentbird scents in.  It’s not only practical and functional but it’s also very stylish and chic!  Oh, and it’s environmentally-friendly too so that’s a bonus!

Other fun uses for empty Diptyque Candle Jars can include holding the following:

Cotton rounds

Q-tips

Rings

Other makeup like lipgloss or lip and eye pencils

Nail polishes

Makeup brushes

Pens & Pencils

Matches

Bobby pins or hair clips

Small toiletries

Washi tape

Hot glue gun sticks

Sewing notions (safety pins, etc)

Office supplies

Top 10 Posts of 2018

1 – Loveliest Looks of Christmas Tour  Somehow I knew this first Christmas tour of the year was going to be a favorite.  I invited some of my favorite blogger friends to join me in this tour that Pottery Barn sponsored and we had a blast!  Those mercury glass trees in my entry were some of your favorite pieces (and mine too).

We not only shared beautiful Pottery Barn holiday decor throughout our homes but also their faux furs, like this robe and slippers, which are some of my favorite little luxuries during the winter months.  I was overwhelmed with delight to get so much feedback from all of you telling me that you were obsessed with the robe and slippers and it was either A) on your Christmas wish lists or B) you were gifting them to yourself.  I hope you all got some furry prezzies like you hoped!

2 – Whimsical Glam Christmas Living Room In Pastels  This was one of my favorite Christmas trees and mantels I’ve ever decorated because I designed it for my children.  I have my entry and office trees that are all glammed up the way I like them.

However, after seeing the new Nutcracker movie, I was inspired to create a soft and whimsical living room (and also kitchen) that would bring a little magic to our Christmas.

It still had the glam factor but the kids absolutely LOVED it and I was so grateful that you all fell in love with it as well!

3- Master Bedroom Updates For Fall & Winter  I loved partnering with my darling friends at Pom Pom At Home when they asked me to share their gorgeous bedding.

It also featured a few of the pretty pumpkins that HotSkwash sent me.

 

4- Master Bedroom Summer Refresh  I love being in my bedroom and I’m glad you all loved another master bedroom post as well.  Thank you so much!

5- Free Printable 2018 Calendar  I couldn’t believe how many of you visited the blog for this calendar all through December!  I was so pleasantly surprised. Guess what?  My 2019 calendar will be available on the blog TOMORROW so make sure to check back for it!  It’s going to be beautiful!  I hoped to have it available last week but we decided to go home to California for the holidays so I’m a tad behind.

6- The Prettiest Ways To Style Pumpkins For The Fall  This was fun because it’s really the first year that I’ve truly been excited for fall decor.

I had so many fun glam pumpkin vignettes but the blush pumpkin table might have been my favorite.  The best part was getting your emails and messages with pics of your “pink fall decor” in your home after feeling so inspired by my posts.  See!  This is why I love creating and sharing!  We all grab inspiration and ideas from each other and can create our own versions in our own homes.  It’s a beautiful thing!  Keep sharing your homes with me.  I love it!

7- Blush & Gold Glam Office Reveal  Y’all were sooooo sweet when I revealed my home office at the beginning of February.  We had only been in our home for a couple of months after it was built and it was so fun to finally share my very own office.  Your love for this space put the biggest smile on my face (hey, that rhymes! lol).

It was a fast design but I liked it. Then, a few months later, I decided I really wanted blush pink walls.  So I hired a painter (since my tennis elbow was at it’s worst) and revealed it again in this post.  I know!  I’m crazy haha!  Want to know something even crazier?  It’s about to get its 3rd and final makeover in a year {face palm} and this time it’s going to be perfect.  Just wait! 

8- Tween Girl’s Bedroom In Blush, Gold & Grey  Almost a year after moving into our home, I finally shared Brooklyn’s tween bedroom with you and your kind words meant so much to me and especially to her.

Brooklyn’s about to turn 13 and she chose everything for her bedroom, with very little help from me.  These bow lamps might be my favorite thing in this room. I was tempted to steal them for my office but I resisted.

9- Loveliest Looks of Summer Tour  In every new season, I host a “Loveliest Looks Tour” of the current season’s fashion and decor and this one in summer was a favorite all year-long.

Could it be all the peonies we get to enjoy from May to June?  As I’m writing this, I’m sitting here in fuzzy warm socks next to the fire and wishing it was summer right now and wishing I had some fresh peony flowers.  Between the summertime decor and flowers, recipes and sundresses….it just might be my favorite season.  Who am I kidding?  It’s definitely my favorite season. 

After all, I was born in the summer and on National Pink Day so it only makes sense.  I turned 40 this last year so it was definitely a big birthday and a fun one.  Ok!  Moving on to our last of the top 10 posts of 2018!!!

10- French Inspired Back Patio Dining Even into the winter, this post was being read and pinned over and over.  So, I think we can all agree that there’s something special about being outdoors in a beautiful setting and enjoying delicious food while the sun sets.  That was our summer here in the Pacific Northwest (notice all the new and small flowers I had just planted) and it was divine!

After living in Texas most of the last 15 years (I’m a Cali girl who married a Texan and we’ve mostly lived there) and a couple years in Vegas, it has been soooo refreshing to live in such a gorgeous green area where you can grow almost anything and it actually cools down in the evening and eating outdoors is pleasant and delightful.  I love it here and I can’t wait to keep landscaping our back and side yards and eat outside again!  We also added a striped french-style retractable awning that extends over the patio and I’ll share it with you this spring.

Stay tuned for lots of fun outdoor additions, including a step-by-step tutorial on this DIY putting green that I secretly made in a day for my husband for Fathers’ Day last summer!  Beckham’s trying it out here.  My husband LOVED it!!!!  I thought he was going to cry!  He was soooo surprised and I think it’s his favorite gift ever.  I almost paid a few thousand dollars for someone to build me one BUT I decided to do it myself for under $500.  Look for this in March or April 2019.

The Ultimate Gift Guides

First, I’ve gathered some of my favorite gift ideas and put them here in front of my tree to share with you.  

While I love a nice handbag, I really LOVE a nice crossbody purse as well.  When I’m out Christmas shopping and don’t have a shopping cart to put my purse in, like at the mall, carrying a handbag is just too heavy and makes shopping exhausting.  But a small and lovely crossbody is the perfect solution to allow me to shop for hours without back and shoulder and neck pain.  These 3 shown here are under $30 and I’ll link them below.  I’ll also link a few high-end pieces that I have and love as well.

Slippers are my favorite shoes….at home at least.  I wear them all year long.  In the summer, I wear open-toed slippers, or house shoes, because it’s just more comfortable on the hard floor.  These are so affordable and I get so many compliments.

Gift ideas for the stylish homemaker who keeps a clean home

A clean house is a happy house!  That’s my mantre.  However, just as I like pink items to bake and cook, I like pink items to clean my home.  I looove NORWEX so much that I signed up as a rep and now they are producing many items (some of my faves above) in Rose Quartz & Champagne.  Hallelujah!  They are so pretty.  Anyway….I’m done with chemicals and all I’ve learned about them causing lung cancer etc.  My housekeeper won’t even use chemicals to clean.  She was using “natural/safe cleaners” but we found they weren’t that natural or safe after all.  Norwex microfiber is the only company with a patent on their self-cleaning sterling silver microfiber threads. I know the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale started yesterday and I told y’all about HERE in yesterday’s post, and you could say that all of those things are current crushes.  But here are a few more of my latest current crushes that I’m sharing with you today.  Don’t forget, you can always see all of my “Current Crushes” on my “Current Crushes” page all year-long.  I update it and change it constantly.  The crushes below are fun things I’m adding that I just love.

Ok, let’s go from left to right clockwise.

I bought this darling sundress as a swimsuit coverup but it can also be worn by itself.  I love the soft blue, I love stripes, and I just absolutely love anything with tassels.  I have so many Amazon fashion favorites that I’ll be sharing soon because their variety is quite impressive, you can get them quickly, return them easily if necessary, and the prices are pretty darn good.

The cute white handkerchief is my grandmother’s.  She passed away in March and I brought a lot of my favorite things of hers home with me and this is just precious.  I love to keep it with me and think of her.  And it’s stylish….so that’s fun.  She had great taste.  Do you carry something sentimental like that?

This Tory Burch Small Fleming Convertible Bag in “Seltzer” was so hot that it sold out quickly. I found a couple places for you to purchase it though, HERE and HERE. But you’ll have to hurry because they’ll be impossible to find soon. Josh bought it for me last month for my 40th, matching the Tory Burch Miller Sandals that were also in “Seltzer” which you can find HERE or HERE.  I get so many compliments on them both and it’s the prettiest color this summer!

I found some darling blue and blush notebooks at my local HomeGoods and TJMaxx.  I love notebooks!  I use them for so many different things and always have one on hand.  I love when they coordinate with my outfit, ha!  It’s the little things!

I get asked all the time what nail polish I’m wearing. It’s a gel color from the salon and doesn’t have a name, just a number, and only salons can get it. But it matches my toe color that I wear all summer and looks so pretty on tan skin or pale skin.  It’s Essie’s “Ballet Slipper” and you can get it HERE or HERE.

A really lovely light scent is Lollia Wish “Sugared Pastille”and I’ve fallen in love with it all over again and is so pretty and light to wear during the day.  I also keep a small travel size (shown above) in my purse.  I haven’t met a person that didn’t love it!

If you’ve seen my Instagram stories, you already know how much I love these Quay “Muse” Sunglasses.  The price point is fabulous and so much better than other designer brands.

 The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has some MAJOR deals – which means it is a great chance to stock up on basics or splurge on the many investment items that are deeply discounted. It’s also the best time to purchase winter essentials.  Even if you’re picking them up and want to see them in person, buy them online NOW and then you can change your mind when you get there.  That way, you are sure to get what you want!

I’ve been digging through the site to find the best items and will update daily as things sell out and new pieces are added. I absolutely love a pretty pair of pajamas! Weather it’s a Girls Night In, a fun trip away, or lounging around the house….feeling cute and comfortable is important to me! I’ve been rounding up some of the most adorable pajamas I love right now and sharing them with you today!  Oh, I know I’ve share robes and slippers with you too in other posts here and here, but I thought it would be appropriate to include them in this post as well so that you have all of your sleepwear in one place!

Ok, girls…..let’s keep it real for a minute…..

I could possibly LIVE in my pajamas if they were always this cute and comfy…haha!  Seriously!  Although, I do love a good pair of jeans and a pretty dress.

Sometimes, as seen above, I leave them on and run out the door in them whilst dropping children off for school (and praying that I don’t break down or have a car accident hahaha). At least the pj’s are cute and at least I have my favorite Mini Millers on and my toenails painted!

Sometimes I wear them when I watch a Royal Wedding (with Grandma’s fancy hat) and drink tea.  I can’t believe I’m sharing this silly selfie with you but we are keepin’ it real right?!  LOL!  I actually shared this pic on my Instagram stories after Princess Harry & Meghan Markle said, “I do!” last weekend.  Y’all LOVED that and we laughed together!  My grandma’s gotta be up in Heaven laughing at me because she knows that this is typical of me ha!

Sometimes when my hubby is traveling and I roll over to FaceTime to see that for once I washed my face the night before so I don’t have mascara “raccoon eyes” and I slept so hard that I didn’t roll over much and my hair is still curled and has some nice body…I stay in my pj’s to take a pic and send it to him and then we chat.  I might have some bags under my eyes but with the morning light and cute pajamas….who cares right?!

Sometimes I wear them all day and blog in them and then sit with Brooklyn and play our ukelele’s together.  And then I wear them to bed again haha!  Don’t judge!  Not often or anything but it has happened!

And of course at the end of each night, no – not sometimes but EVERY time, I put on some adorable pajamas and grab some tea or a Diet Coke and either cuddle with Giorgio for a little bit or cuddle with a kid.  Then they all go to bed and Josh and I {cuddle} and watch our shows.  I love pajamas, people!

Hello gorgeous!  I’m back today with another edition of Current Crushes!  I love to post these regularly, although this is a new series.  But I’ve also got a page called “Current Crushes” that is always on the home page of my website and these items can be found there.  That page gets updated every week or so and is a fun place to shop fun finds that I’ve curated.

One of my favorite things to wear, when it’s weather-appropriate, is a boyfriend style button-up shirt. It’s nice and baggy and super comfy and perfect with a pair of good jeans.  I’ll even put on a great pair of sandals or flip-flops or baseball cap and run my kids around or run errands. It’s a comfortable outfit but not frumpy and it’s better than sweats, ha!  This shirt is definitely one of my current crushes and I have them in a few different colors.

That candle you see on the right finally arrived, after being delivered to the wrong address.  The Sugared Blossom is a new scent and WOW it is to die for!!! It has luscious fragrance notes of sugared jasmine petals, Italian citron and creamy Tahitian vanilla bean.  I mean…it’s the perfect spring and summer candle!  And it’s pretty!

The other day it was chilly but the rain stopped and then sun was out and it was bright!  I’ve always been a “hat girl” so I absolutely adore this blush panama hat I recently purchased.  I already had my blush tennies so I thought it would be fun to pair them with this blue shirt and the blush hat.  I’m crushing on that combo lately, if you’ve seen all my recent blog posts.  It’s been my “theme” for spring.

This cute blush ruffle clutch is another current crush and I just adore it.  So it was also a part of my outfit the other day.  It goes with so many other things.  I can dress it up or down and it comes in a pretty blue color as well.

Did you catch our “Loveliest Looks of Spring Tour” yesterday?  I shared this fabulous new striped ruffle skirt that I just bought and adore.  It’s so light and flowy and comfy. And the price point is fabulous!  I’ll share some others I love as well that are similar.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram OR if you’ve visited my spring mantel, table & kitchen, and spring fashion posts here last week, you are fully aware that I have a crush on the color combo of “blush and blue” lately.  So, I’ll be continuing with that today!

I love setting up my bar carts and tea carts and changing them up for each season.  We don’t drink alcohol so whatever I set up is for the entire family and you can too. Whether you’re having family or friends over for Easter or just for any occasion, all ages can enjoy this bar cart.

I found this darling bar cart and loved it because it has marble and because it’s a pretty champagne gold, just like my kitchen lighting.  If you have fresh flowers or faux flowers, grab them and put them on your cart.

I have lots of fresh flowers in my home but I decided to use my favorite temple jar and some cherry blossom stems (from Michaels).  Nothing says “spring” like cherry blossoms, right?!

You can always bake something sweet to serve BUT as much as I love to bake, I wanted to keep this simple.  I went to Trader Joe’s and picked up some of my favorite Cranberry Orange & Almond Scones.  If you haven’t tried them, you are missing out!  They’re divine!

You’ll also need some dessert napkins, glasses, and a bottle opener.

Fill your cart up with assorted drinks and flavors, if you wish.  I love getting mine at World Market because they have such fun and exotic beverages.  I also love these strawberry rhubarb soda’s from Trader Joe’s.  In keeping with my blush and blue color palette that I’ve been sharing this spring, I chose coordinating drinks and chocolates.

My new favorite skirt, this week, is this adorable blue and white striped ruffled chambray skirt that ties on the side with a bow.  It’s lightweight and so comfortable!  As the weather has been warming up, I can wear it out with a short-sleeve shirt or even a light cardigan if it gets chilly.  I originally paired it with a fun long gold and white necklace but I thought it looked so much cuter with this peachy-pink statement necklace I’ve had for a few years.  It’s such a nice long length that it was perfect to wear with my nude wedges.

I brought down my blush bench and added a couple of pillows for a little sitting area next to the bar cart.  Now I’m ready for company!  Who’s coming over?

Moving from Texas last year to the Pacific Northwest has been a little adjustment.  We traded humidity and “y’all” for more frequent rain and even a little snow.  But one thing is for sure…it is the most gorgeous place!  I’ve never experienced such a beautiful spring and summer and fall like I have here.  The beauty though is largely due to all the rain we get to make everything green.  I don’t mind it though. A little rain never bothered me.  However, I do like to be prepared for it and I do like to be stylish whilst running around town in it.  I figured you might appreciate that too so here is my rain gear round-up…the spring essentials you need!
